Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Björn VW, and I am originally from South Africa. I am the Owner & Executive Planner of Björn & Company. I live in New York City, and when I am not planning events, I enjoy walking and spending time with friends (I know this might sound cliché, LOL).

Why did you decide to go into event planning? What about it appeals to you?
I worked at a restaurant in New York, and back then, I was a server and host. When the owner asked me to take over [planning] their private parties, I, of course jumped at the opportunity. The first party I booked was a baptism, and I remember that feeling (I was on a high like no other for about a week because it was so much planning!) and that’s when I knew that this was indeed the career path I would like to go into.
In planning engagement parties, baby showers, and bridal showers, I wanted to do more—I needed to do more. With event planning, there is always a new challenge, a new client, and new needs. The creative process, the planning aspect, the wearing-of-different-hats is what brings me joy. Plus, it’s great being your own boss and being able to set your own hours.
What’s one thing that you wish someone had told you when you were just starting out in the business?

That it’ll take a while before you see results. Björn & Company is now in it’s 3rd year, and it took a while before my business actually took off. When I first started, I thought event planning was all things pretty and beautiful, but I discovered quickly that logistics, contracts, spreadsheets, etc is a huge part of the planning process. It makes you understand your job as planner and the event at hand so much more. It also takes a while to find your niche in the industry.
We noticed that you specialize in a whole host of different events. What’s your favorite event to plan and why?
I specialize in certain types of events, and I do enjoy them all. Like I said before, every client and every event is so different. You face a different challenge every time. I don’t like to compare them because all my events mean equally as much as the other.
How do you think QC Event School has prepared you for working in the field?

QC taught me a lot about the theory of events. I thought I knew it all, but they proved me wrong, LOL. To any students who are considering QC Career School, I highly recommend it. You will learn so much more and it’ll prepare you for what’s ahead.
What do you think the future holds for you and your business?
To be honest, I don’t know. I’m building my business everyday to get it to new levels and reach new heights. I don’t see myself in any other career path in the future, because I genuinely enjoy and care for my business and the industry. My heart is in it and to finally be in a career that I love and that I am excited about, is a career I want to stay in. For now, I’ll continue to grow and elevate my brand to its full potential and hopefully get on TV, LOL.
